Ene-Liis Semper:
Four Works

Curated by Karen Henry

Estonian artist Ene-Liis Semper’s work is a blend of video and performance art that has been influenced by film and theatre. Her video works record performances done specifically for the camera, focussing on the artist herself. In their concentration on the relation between the artist and the image, these video works echo North American video strategies from the 1970s. Semper’s works, however, are informed by a sophisticated understanding of the dramatic potential of the image. Her gestures are spare but have a dramatic resonance that is both seductive and unsettling, able to evoke some of the power of Greek myths mixed with the paranoia and uncertainty of contemporary experience. They reflect on the artificiality of media representations, but also their power to inhabit life, addressing classic themes of seduction, male-female relations, self-sacrifice and death. The exhibition will present four works, two on monitors and two as video projections.

The exhibition is funded by the Canada Council and by DFAIT

PERFORMANCE FOR VIDEO
A workshop with Estonian Artist Ene-Liis Semper
June 13-14-15, 11am - 6pm
Organized by Presentation House Gallery with the Western Front Media and Performance Programs
Ene-Liis Semper works in performance specifically for video, using a very austere theatricality focussing on the body and simple iconic gestures. She works specifically with video loops as a reflection on the medium itself and its capability for endless reproduction. Semper has received much acclaim for her work which was included in Manifesta 2000, an exhibition of young artists in Europe, and in the Venice Biennale, 2001. The workshop will offer a limited number of participants the opportunity to work with Semper and the technical staff at the Western Front. Each participant will be able to produce a short (3-5m) performance for video within the time limits of the workshop framework). Participants must have some prior experience in performance work. Performance sites will be limited to the studio and possibly one outdoor site. The workshop will involve discussions of ideas, simple set-up, shooting, editing, and group critique.
Participants should come prepared with props and an idea of what they would like to do.
Interested persons should submit a one-page letter to the Western Front Performance Program by May 25, perfart@front.bc.ca. Please include information on your performance experience and why you are interested in working with video.
