From
Goddess to Pin-Up, organized by Patricia Uberoi and Pooja Sood,
comes to Vancouver directly from its successful presentation
at the India Centre of Art & Culture in New York following
tours of India, the Netherlands and Japan. This exhibition presents
a sociologist’s-eye-view of a rather neglected genre of
Indian culture, “calendar art”, focusing in particular
on the representation of women from 1960 onwards. “From
the devotional and nationalistic to the glamorous pin-up and
advertisements, the calendars reveal the ways that commercial,
political, religious and social interests converge on images
of the female body.”
