Vancouver photographer Howard Ursuliak works within the documentary style to explore the viewer’s relationship to pictorial space. His images of natural and human environments reinforce the viewer’s relationship to a particular scene or object. Ursuliak is interested in the meaning behind his own presence in the work, intimated in images that often suggest the trace of another’s presence. His highly considered practice foregrounds processes of seeing, where the compulsion to look is emphasized by highlighting the spatial relationship between the photographer, subject and the viewer. He often works with the enigmatic qualities of light to create a sensual space and sense of intimacy, as in this compelling photograph.
Ursuliak completed studies at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design (ECUAD) and received an MFA from the University of British Columbia. His work has been exhibited internationally since 1997 and is represented by the Monte Clark Gallery in Vancouver, Clark and Faria in Toronto and Galeria Fucares in Madrid and Almagro, Spain. Works from his ‘Vestige’ series were recently acquired by the National Gallery of Cananda / CMCP, and he is in the collection of the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris, France, El Centro de Fotografia, Universidad de Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain, IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno), Valencia, Spain, Fundacion Foto Colectania, Barcelona, Spain. He has exhibited widely in Canada and Europe. He is represented by Monte Clark Gallery, Vancouver.
