Born in Brooklyn in 1946, Sultan grew up in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles during the 1950s. Over the past 30 years, he has worked both individually and collaboratively on a broad range of exhibitions, public art and book projects. His photographic work has been shown internationally including exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, and the Barbican Gallery, London. He has received fellowships and grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and the Flintridge Foundation, among others. Evidence, his seminal work of conceptual photography (in collaboration with Mike Mandel) published in 1977 has been recently reissued by D.A.P. and has toured as an exhibition. His recent photographic series of adult film sets in California are widely acclaimed. This photograph from a series about his parents is indicative of his astute interpretations of domesticity and suburban life.
