Born in Vancouver in 1955, Greg Girard is an internationally renowned Canadian photographer. Living in Shanghai since 1998, Girard is currently documenting the transformations taking place across China and Asia, and has worked on assignment for publications such as Time, Newsweek, Fortune, The New York Times Magazine and other US and European titles.A major new book, Phantom Shanghai, focuses on the transformations taking place in that city, and builds on the book City of Darkness produced while Girard lived in Hong Kong between 1983 and 1998. His Shanghai photographs portray a city in process of dismantling and erasing its history, and witness what William Gibson, in his foreword, calls “the actual vanishing, the hideous 21-century urban hat trick”. Many of the neglected historic buildings Girard documents have since been destroyed, and his stunning, richly-coloured images of shops, homes, and neighbourhoods record an architectural history and way of life that is rapidly disappearing. Zhabei House #1 is reproduced in Phantom Shanghai, a book that Time magazine has called a visual elegy to a lost city.

Girard’s lyrical realism and eye for gritty detail will be showcased in a solo exhibition of the artist’s early Vancouver photographs at Monte Clark Gallery this month.
