In this photograph Vancouver artist Kevin Schmidt engages with the rich pictorial tradition of west-coast landscape. Often drawing on art historical, pop cultural, political and spiritual references, Schmidt works with the artifice of cinematic and theatrical conventions. His 2004 installation Fog at Presentation House Gallery was comprised of two large slide projections depicting fog-shrouded forest floors, and presented a meditative reflection on nature as both a sublime and artificially constructed spectacle. This theme drives much of Schmidt’s work, including his video piece Long Beach, Led Zep (2002), and the recent DVD installation, Burning Bush (2005). His interest in the recuperative possibilities of landscape art is infused with an optimistic humanism. Since graduating from Emily Carr in 1997, Schmidt has had solo exhibitions across Canada and has been included in group exhibitions in Frankfurt, New York, Liverpool and Edinburgh. His work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. He will showcase a new video installation at Catriona Jeffries Gallery in September, 2006.
