The evocative images of Toronto-based photographer Geoffrey James invite an experience of the compelling beauty and “morbid symptoms” found in natural and built environments. His keen observations of our contemporary landscape are meditations on time and decay, persistence and perseverance, and this striking image is from an ongoing series of large-scale black and white photographs of single trees. James’ projects have drawn him to produce in-depth studies of urban centers including Toronto, Montreal, Paris and Rome, as well as dystopian sites like the Mexican/American border at Tijuana and asbestos mines in Quebec. His photographic commissions include Italian gardens, Olmstead’s parks, and most recently the Whitney family estate. His intriguing photographs cleverly transfix a moment that compresses past, present and future in a way that puts our sense of perspective into question. Geoffrey James has been the subject of countless publications including his bestselling book, Paris, which was awarded the prestigious Roloff Beny Photography Book Award in 2002. Douglas and McIntyre will publish the artist’s book on Toronto this year. His photographs are part of museum collections across Europe and North America, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The National Gallery of Canada is currently organizing a retrospective. In 1998 PHG exhibited and toured James’ Running Fence project, publishing a book of the same name.

Represented in Vancouver by Equinox Gallery, Vancouver.
